Guide to Hash: What is Hash & How to Smoke It

If you’re familiar with cannabis, you’ve probably heard of hash. But what is it exactly? Is it just concentrated weed with a different name? How do you smoke it? And why should you add it to your next sesh?

What Is Hash?

At its core, hash is simply concentrated cannabis. Also referred to as solventless hash rosin–or just solventless–hash is made by extracting the trichomes (the sticky, crystal-like structures on cannabis flowers that contain all the good stuff like THC, CBD, and terpenes). When you press or collect these trichomes, you get hash, which comes in various forms, textures, and colors.

Think of it like this: hash is like the super concentrate of cannabis. While the flower is the raw ingredient, hash is the highly refined, potent extract. Depending on the method used to extract it, you’ll get different textures, colors, and consistencies. And unlike other extraction methods which give you a concentrate, no solvents (i.e. butane, propane, or ethanol) are used.

The Different Types of Hash

Now, let’s dive into the types of hash you might come across—because there are several varieties, each with distinct features.

1. Bubble Hash

Bubble hash is made by washing cannabis buds in ice water to separate the trichomes, which are then filtered and dried. The result is a sticky, crumbly substance that can vary in color—from light brown to deep amber. This hash offers a clean, smooth high and is the most flavorful.

2. Hash Rosin

Hash rosin is made by applying heat and pressure to bubble hash or kief. The result is a beautiful, golden resin that’s potent and flavorful. Unlike bubble hash, which relies on water, rosin is made without solvents, making it a go-to for fans of solventless concentrates. Plus, it can be smoked in many ways, making it incredibly versatile.

3. Traditional Hash

Traditional hash is made by pressing cannabis resin into a solid block. This is the kind of hash you might have seen in old-school movies, often in a hard, compressed form. The color of traditional hash can vary from greenish to brown, depending on the quality of the cannabis used and the method of extraction.

How to Smoke Hash

Smoking hash is pretty straightforward, but there are a few methods that work particularly well.

1. Dabbing

Dabbing is now the most common way to consume hash. You’ll need a dab rig and a torch to heat a nail. Once the nail is hot, you’ll apply the hash to it, where it instantly vaporizes, allowing you to inhale a potent hit. This method is great for those who want a strong, fast-acting high.

2. Vaping

Carts and single-use vapes are another common way to smoke hash. Many brands who carry hash also have a vape version that’s consumed the same way you would consume a distillate, cured, or live cannabis product. Like dabbing, this method is great for those that want a strong and fast-acting high–but this option offers you portability and discretion.

3. In a Joint or Blunt

One of the simplest ways to enjoy hash is by adding it to a joint or blunt. Just sprinkle a bit of hash on your flower before rolling it up. As you smoke, the hash will melt into the flower, creating a potent and flavorful experience.

4. Using a Pipe or Bong

You can also smoke hash in a pipe or bong. If you’re using a pipe, place a small amount of hash on top of your ground cannabis or directly into the bowl. Light it up, and enjoy the smooth, rich smoke. For a bong, you can pack the hash into the bowl or even dab it for an extra punch.
